While it possible to get this mastery point without Itzel Poison Lore, it is recommended to unlock the mastery first. The poison in the area can interrupt you from channeling to get the Mastery, and can even kill players who stay there long enough. Mesmers, if their timing is good, can open a portal right as they begin casting the mastery and take portal at the same time, then retake portal back right before the cast ends, thus avoiding the need for Itzel Poison Lore.
