Mad King Thorn will issue a series of randomized commands. Any time a command is given after it says "... Mad King says..." (can be in the form "Your Mad King says..." or "This Mad King says..."), players must perform the emote (and only that emote) within the time limit for the command or be punished. An emote command is given in the Event text along with the timer. Performing correctly grants the player a stack of Mad King's Favor. Failure to act correctly in either scenario results in being knocked down and taking a large amount of damage. In addition, a laughing Jack-o-Lantern appears above the player's head. After every three commands, the Mad King will teleport to a random spot in the Grand Piazza and resume his work after a short pause. He will continue this until 15 commands are given (approximately 10 minutes).

There are 15 random objectives from the following list where you are required to perform the given action before the event bar is filled. BECKON! BOW! CHEER! COWER! DANCE! KNEEL! LAUGH! Say NO! POINT! PONDER! SALUTE! SHRUG! SIT! SLEEP! Act SURPRISED! THREATEN! WAVE! Say YES!

Due to how event participation functions, players who are outside the orange circle (and could be as far away as the bank area) or simply pass through will be damaged and knocked down if they do not do any emotes and may get stacks of Mad King's Favor. After the event, they will also get teleported to the Mystic Forge cauldron. If you run out of range for the end surprise, you may not receive the Mad King's Chest Key Fragments that you earned during the round. If you disconnect during the event you lose your stacks of Mad King's Favor. The activity was first introduced with the October 22, 2012 update, as part of the Shadow of the Mad King 2012 release, and has returned for every following Halloween.
